Type A behavior pattern is characterized by excessive competitiveness, extreme commitment to work, impatience or time urgency, and hostility. Hostility appears to be the most critical factor. Type D personality is characterized by distress. People with Type D experience negative emotions and feel insecure or anxious. Type A personality is associated with doubled risk for coronary artery disease and an eightfold increased risk of heart attack. Type D personality people with negative affect tend to have more problems after cardiac surgery, and those Type D individuals with high levels of emotional distress are at increased risk of fatal and nonfatal heart attacks.
