Explain why common misunderstandings of law have developed, and identify three basic common misunderstandings regarding the nature of law

Because law seems clearer and less subjective than questions regarding ethics, several common misunderstandings regarding the nature of law have developed: (1) There is a feeling that law is all inclusive and that if you need a legal determination, all you need to do is apply the correct legal precedent. In fact, law is incomplete and always growing. (2) The belief that if one does this, the law will do that is a misunderstanding based on the idea that the law is prescriptive and certain. In fact, there are areas where we have no previous rulings, and even where we have legal precedence to guide us, growth and change occur. (3) The final misunderstanding is that the law tells you what to do. In this way of thinking, legal acts are those things you should do, and illegal acts are to be avoided.
