What are some major methodological considerations one must consider when conducting a

language assessment?

What will be an ideal response?

First, researchers should pinpoint exactly what they want to assess. Some researchers
prefer to assess broad linguistic competencies, and may use an assessment that provides
an accurate, yet brief, assessment of syntax, morphology, and phonology. However,
other researchers may prefer a highly detailed assessment of one particular ability, such
as syntax. Second, the researcher should consider who will be the primary informant.
Some language assessments require a trained examiner, some require a parent, some
require both. Although some experts are skeptical of the parent's perspective, it is true
that parents often witness the child's highest linguistic performance. Finally, the
researcher must consider where to assess language, for example, some researchers
prefer to assess language in naturalistic settings whereas other experts prefer a more
structured assessment.
