The shoulder muscles encircle and support the GH joint like the spokes on a wheel. When the shoulder muscles are balanced, they seat the humerus in the socket and optimally align the shoulder girdle, which is essential for any subsequent arm motion to be efficient and coordinated. As the arm moves, the shoulder muscles work in couple pairs, keeping the humerus centered in the socket. If any shoulder muscle becomes chronically shortened or stretch-weakened, it will pull the joint off center and disrupt the coordinated chain of movement in the arm.
