Information processing approaches suggest that the process of encoding, storage, and retrieval are analogous to different parts of a computer. Encoding can be thought of as a computer's keyboard, where you would input the information. Storage is the computer's hard drive, where knowledge is stored. Retrieval is analogous to software that accesses the information for display on the computer screen. Only when all three processes are operating can information be processed.
