Sensory memory may hold 9 or more items. Visual images last about 1/4 of a second, whereas sounds last up to 4 seconds. Working (or, short-term memory) holds between 5 and 9 items, and information stays there for, at most, 20 seconds. Information in long-term memory may remain permanently, and its capacity is unlimited.
