What are the benefits and problems of using extinction and punishment to change

maladaptive behaviors? What are the therapist's goals?

What will be an ideal response?

The answer should describe the possible uses of extinction. It should then describe the
two major problems with extinction: extinction burst and difficulty eliminating the reinforcers for
the undesired behaviors. Similarly, the answershould indicate problems with the use of
punishment. It should indicate that punishment is sometimes used as a last resort when extreme
self-harming does not respond to other techniques.
