Students can choose one of the following. If a woman is married to a covered employee for fewer than 10 years, a divorce cancels her access to her former husband’s benefits. And because the benefits an individual receives are roughly based on contributions, a woman who has not been working but returns to work after a divorce will find it difficult to accumulate enough credits for a significant retirement benefit. If both a husband and wife work, the pair receives little additional benefit if they remain married. This is true even though they pay twice as much in Social Security contribution as a couple with only one worker. Benefits are based on each partner’s individual work record and there is no spousal benefit. On average, the replacement rate for a one-worker couple is 61%, for two-earner couple, it is 44%.
