How do different cultural backgrounds impact listening?
What will be an ideal response?
Cultural backgrounds impact listening expectations as well as listening behaviors.
Chapter 3 discusses in particular how high and lowcontext cultures set differing expectations
for listening. Lowcontext cultures value explicit verbal statements, while highcontext cultures
value implicit communication evaluated by its overall context. Lowcontext cultures, like the
U.S., offer lots of specific and explicit directions, which can sound insulting to highcontext
listeners, like the Japanese. Similarly, Japanese workers may think Americans ask too many
questions and lack the ability to work independently.
