What did Vygotsky mean by the terms scaffolding and the zone of proximal development?

Scaffolding includes an appropriate level of attention on the part of the child and the appropriate use of "props" by the adult mentor. Zone of proximal development must take into consideration what the child has learned up to the point of new learning, and their abilities at the point of new learning.
