Explain the concept of audience disposition and how it is relevant to audience analysis

Audience disposition describes how listeners are inclined to react to a speaker and his
or her ideas. There are three general audience dispositions: favorable, unfavorable, and
neutral. Each can also be classified according to its intensity – strong, moderate, etc. Favorable
audiences usually are inclined to agree with the speaker and are voluntary. Unfavorable
audiences are sometimes classified as captive, and speakers addressing this type of audience
must try to overcome negative attitudes in order to have a positive impact on the audience.
Neutral audiences may be uninterested, uninformed, or undecided about the topic. It is to the
speaker's benefit to find out why audience members are neutral and use effective
corresponding strategies to reach those neutral listeners.
