Grace and Cherie used to do everything together, but then they had a big fight. Now their friendship is quickly waning. Illustrate the stages of their friendship coming apart using Knapp’s model of relationship development and briefly describe what occurs in each stage.

What will be an ideal response?

First, Grace and Cherie will enter the differentiating stage. In this stage, they will start to highlight their independence and differences from each other. Next is the circumscribing stage, in which they will restraining their communication behaviors and interact less. The stagnating stage is an extension of the circumscribing stage, in which they often just don’t bring up topics because of imagined conversations that go poorly. In the avoiding stage, Grace and Cherie will physically avoid each other or places that they might run into each other. Finally, in the terminating stage they decide to end the relationship. Since they are friends who do not live together, this stage may not be very formal.
