Stage models tend to be linear in nature, where relationships are thought to move from one step to the next with some stages leading toward commitment and other stages leading to relationship dissolution. Relational trajectory models, on the other hand, do not view relationships as progressing in a linear fashion, but instead see relationship development as more variable.
