Explain the purpose of dirty bits in a cache.

What will be an ideal response?

A dirty bit is used in a write-back cache to indicate that there was a write to the address specified in the cache which was not yet committed to memory.  This means that the cache contains the only correct value of the data at that address and that the next time that address is evicted from the cache the circuitry should write the value to memory before loading the new address.
