Explain the nature of visual acuity in the newborn. Describe the changes that occur over the first 3–4 months of life
What will be an ideal response
The answer should include a clear understanding of the visual abilities of a newborn
through 4 months of age. Infants are born legally blind which means they can focus
only on objects between 4 and 30 inches away. By 2 months they can recognize
faces, and by 3 months they can focus on specific facial features. Binocular vision
appears by 14 weeks.
