Why do some people argue that providing illegal immigrants amnesty or a path to citizenship is a better alternative than repatriation?

Many illegal immigrants have lived for years, or even decades. They may obey the laws and have children who are citizens. Their potentially high degree of assimilation could make them more difficult to locate.
