What is the difference between hearing and listening? How do they work together?

What will be an ideal response?

Hearing is the physiological processing of sound waves. Any listening that incorporates vocal communication messages requires the ability to hear. Listening is a psychological process involving five stages: (1) selecting the auditory input to pay attention to; (2) attending to the sounds selected; (3) understanding what we have selected and attended to by associating it with what we already know; (4) responding to the message, either verbally, nonverbally, or both ways; and (5) remembering the information so that we can recall it at a later point in time. So while hearing is a passive process, listening is active.
