Discuss the basic complications of diabetes.

What will be an ideal response?

Besides short term complications of diabetes such as hypoglycemia or diabetic ketoacidosis, people with diabetes frequently develop serious, long-term complications, usually after years of having the disease. Over time hyperglycemia leads to narrowing of the blood vessels. In addition, insulin resistance itself is associated with atherosclerosis, also known as hardening of the arteries. Most of the long term complications of diabetes are related to these vascular changes and involve the cardiovascular system, eyes, kidneys, skin or central nervous system. This vascular damage is progressive over time.
