Describe the function, data sources, focus, and usefulness of a population based cancer registry

Population-based cancer registries collect data on all newly diagnosed cancer cases in the population of a defined geographic area, such as a state, region, or country. Sources of data for the population-based registry include treatment facilities such as hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, radiation facilities, physician offices, pathology laboratories, radiology facilities, other population-based cancer registries, and death certificates. The focus of a population-based cancer registry is on public health and epidemiology. The registry is useful for monitoring cancer trends and patterns of cancer in populations. The data collected assist in prioritizing the use of health resources, planning and evaluation of cancer control efforts in the population, and clinical, epidemiological, and public health research.?
