Very young infants act as if they do not understand that an object continues to exist when it is out of their sight, and even older infants demonstrate some misconceptions, such as the A-not-B error. The preoperational period is from ages 2-7 . One significant limitation in children's thinking is their inability to focus on more than one object dimension at a time. The concrete operational period is from ages 7-12 . One significant limitation in children's thinking is their inability to interpret the world in terms of hypothetical events. The formal operational period is from 12 years onward.
