Three methods for narrowing a topic include topoi, tree diagrams, and search directories. 1) Topoi is a system of topics that allows you to ask a series of questions (Who? What? Why? When? Where? How? and So?) and a series of subquestions (depending on the topic) so you can pinpoint various aspects of the general subject and identify specific categories or divisions on which to focus. A tree diagram starts with the general topic, divides it into parts, then takes one of these parts and divides that into subparts, and so on, arriving at a narrow topic that is manageable. A search directory is a nested list of topics that starts with a very broad subject and guides you to a subdivision of that subject, then a subdivision of that subdivision, and on to very specific and narrow subject areas related to the broad topic.
