Explain this statement in layman's terms: "Eburnation and erosive changes of these joints lead to malalignment of the articular surfaces and decreased stability."

What will be an ideal response?

After the cartilage covering the joints wears away, the bone surface becomes hard and "polished," somewhat like ivory. The surfaces of the joint become misaligned and the joint becomes unstable.
