Describe the recommended process of writing leads that give readers as much important information as possible. How should the lead be structured, and what types of information should be included?
What will be an ideal response?
To build a lead that incorporates as many of these elements as possible, it is recommended that reporters start with a noun-verb-object structure that answers the question “who did what to whom/what?” This will ensure that several of the 5W’s are addressed in the core of the lead, and it will allow the writer to move outward from the core by adding less-important elements, such as when, why and how, around it. The result should be a one-sentence paragraph of 25 to 35 words containing as many of the 5W’s and 1H as possible.
