Compare the individual genius of sculptors Bologna and Cellini.
What will be an ideal response?
Vasari claimed that genius was linked to inventiveness, and both Bologna and Cellini represent this by developing Mannerist and Classical styles in their works. In this regard, in Rape of the Sabine Women (Figure 20.14), Bologna demonstrates his genius in uniting three figures in a single successful spiral composition, a figura serpentinata. Cellini sculpted Perseus (Figure 20.15) as a well-muscled figure and countered the Classical contrapposto pose with Perseus’s weight entirely on the right foot, pressing into Medusa’s body.
