Explain the 3 types of outlines:
rough-draft, speaking, and formal. Explain the differences in
form and function: what does each outline look like, and when and how is it used in the speechmaking process. What are reasons to do a formal speech outline?
What will be an ideal response?
The rough-draft is a basic sketch of the presentation, used when the speaker begins
work. The speaking outline, developed just before the actual presentation, contains primarily key
words or phrases to remind speakers of what they wish to say. Formal outlines contain more
detail than the rough-draft outline and contain introductions, conclusions, and transitions, and
they use standard outline format. Outlines are important preparation tools because they help
speakers to conceptualize ideas, to organize and move ideas around, and to get help from others.
