Describe the debate about the decline of our intellectual abilities in adulthood. Why is it difficult to resolve the question?

What will be an ideal response?

* There is some difficulty in measuring intelligence across age groups due to the cohort effect, which results from differences in educational exposure.
* Schaie concluded that we improve in many of our basic mental abilities; later studies concluded that our intellectual ability increases until the late 30s or 40s, remains stable until the mid-50s or 60s and may not show significant decline until the early 70s.
* Horn identified two types of intelligence: (1) fluid involves the ability to see new relationships, solve new problems, form new concepts, and use new information; (2) crystallized involves the ability to retrieve and use information that has been learned and stored.
* Horn believes fluid, but not crystallized, intelligence declines with age.
