In this excerpt we see a contrast between Greek civilization and non-Greek barbarism. Polyphemus, the terrible Cyclops, lives in a cave by himself and does not reverence the gods. In addition, he fails to provide hospitality to his guests and instead eats them. This shows some of the general Greek views regarding other cultures.
