What is the rationale for using a cold pack after trauma and during acute inflammation?

What will be an ideal response?

Cold will decrease tissue metabolism so tissue with impaired blood flow from edema is better able to survive its period of reduced oxygenation. In addition, cold may reduce inflammation by inhibiting the release of inflammatory chemicals and the tendency to hemorrhage may be reduced by increasing blood viscosity.
