What role does the family play in schizophrenia?

What will be an ideal response?

While it was once thought that features of the home environment "caused" schizophrenia, such simplistic explanations have been discarded. At one time it was believed that inconsistent emotional signals from a parent led to schizophrenia; this "double-bind" hypothesis has not been supported. While there is little or no evidence to support a role for the family environment in the development of the disorder, it has been shown that communication patterns can predict relapse. In other words, familial interactions that are stressful can contribute to relapse. A recurrence of symptoms is more likely in a home that is high in expressed emotion. The elements of expressed emotion are criticism, hostility, and emotional overinvolvement. GRADING RUBRIC - 8 points - 2 points for noting that family not implicated as a causal factor, 2 points role of family in relapse, 2 points for explanation of/reference to double-bind, 2 points for expressed emotion.
