Describe the difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence
Alcohol abuse is drinking alcohol to excess but not having a physical dependence on it. Alcohol dependence occurs when a person has become dependent on alcohol and is unable to stop drinking, even though the alcohol is having a negative effect on the person's health, social relationships, and normal daily activities.
