Briefly discuss the classic study by developmental psychologists Gibson and Walk involving the "visual cliff."

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: In this 1960 study, infants were placed on a sheet of heavy glass and a checkered pattern appeared under one-half of the glass sheet, making it appear that the infant was on a stable floor. In the middle of the glass sheet, the pattern dropped down several feet, forming a "visual cliff." The researchers asked whether infants would willingly crawl across the cliff when called by their mothers. The results were clear. Most of the 6- to 14-month-old infants could not be coaxed over the cliff. This indicated that the ability to perceive depth had been developed by most of the infants.
