How have fertility rates changed since World War II?

What will be an ideal response?

• Fertility rates have declined in most age groups. Reductions in fertility have been dramatic since peak fertility occurred in the mid-1950s.
• The decline in fertility is primarily the result of an increase in female labor force participation, marital dissolutions, and a delayed average age of first marriage; it is also partially due to a reduction in desired family size and delayed initiation of childbearing due to education and employment prospects.
• A slight increase in fertility rates at the higher age levels, specifically ages 30–44, occurred in 2001. Conversely, a decrease in fertility rates in the younger age groups is also evident.
