Implementation of an electronic health record in substance abuse facilities has been slower than in other types of treatment facilities. Still, substance abuse facilities have been motivated to adopt an electronic record system for three reasons. What are they?

(1) to be more efficient in providing treatment, (2) to be more cost-effective with the funding that is utilized by the facility, and (3) to receive incentives from Medicare to implement an electronic health record.
