Today, health insurance pays most costs instead of the patient paying. Many types of therapists are available, including clinical psychologists, instead of just psychiatrists. Many types of treatment are available, instead of mostly Freudian methods. Treatment is briefer, whenever possible. Therapists attempt to make clear diagnoses, and research evaluates the effectiveness of various treatments. The main impetus behind all these changes is the shift to health insurance. An insurer wants to pay for only as much treatment is necessary, only the types of treatment that work, and only the patients who really need help.
