The general purpose is the unrestricted aim of your speech, which can fall into three different categories—to inform, to persuade, or to accentuate a special occasion.
To inform—the giving of information is the aim of this general purpose. Speeches focusing on topics such as "How to Create an Online Budget" and "The Origins of the Universe" are examples.
To persuade—when the goal is to reinforce, change, or influence attitudes, values, beliefs, or actions, the purpose is to persuade. Speeches aiming for increased spending for health care in your state or for a particular political candidate are examples.
To accentuate a special occasion—when the goal to celebrate or commemorate an occasion, this type is used. A wedding toast and graduation commencement speech are examples.
