An RD Gateway server is used to secure access to Remote Desktop from public networks, such as the Internet. When Remote Desktop Connection is configured to use an RD Gateway, RDP traffic is tunneled in HTTPS packets to the RD Gateway server. The RD Gateway server sends the RDP packets on to the internal network. Effectively, this is like an SSL VPN that is specifically designed for Remote Desktop and RDS.
