Discuss the role of women in the Arab states.

What will be an ideal response?

In terms of history, the Qur’an, which was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, revolutionized life for women. In the Qur’an, all are equal in God’s eyes—women and men, slave and master, subject and ruler. Against the status quo of the time, Islam gave women rights in marriage, divorce, property ownership, business, and inheritance. In contemporary society, actual practices have not met Islam’s ideal. Many Muslims contend, then, that the repressive practices against women ascribed to Islam are based on patriarchal cultural traditions, social considerations, and contested interpretations of the Qur’an.
