As the name implies, operational duties are the activities that ensure the overall security of the system during normal operation. The consistent execution of an individual's operational duties is not just a matter of maintaining the security features of the system. Operational duties include such things as regularly monitoring network use, in order to ensure that prescribed policies and procedures are being followed. Operational duties are often drilled into each employee as part of the overall training process; however, just as with routine tasks, those duties can become so habitual that the individual will not give them the required attention. That lack of focus can lead to serious errors and breakdowns in overall security.
