*Performance goals are characterized by motivation from external factors (e.g., grades, praise).
* The answer should include examples of both types of goals and a discussion of the student's own motivation that reflects an understanding of performance vs. mastery goals. Research shows that it is rare for someone to be completely mastery-oriented, as most students hold some performance goals. It is also common for students to have different goals for different courses.
