• Mainland China is ruled by members of the Chinese Communist Party emphasizing strong central planning and state control; Hong Kong has returned to Chinese rule with a government somewhat separate from that of mainland China.
• Taiwan – The Nationalists who had established the Republic of China in 1912 retreated to Taiwan in 1949 when the Chinese Communists took over mainland China (renaming the mainland the People's Republic of China). Taiwan now has a multi-party democracy.
• The city-state of Singapore has a Chinese majority population with a theoretical democracy—in reality Singapore has an authoritarian government run by the same party.
