An emotion is a mental state that unfolds as a process that includes a cause (what triggered it), an appraisal (your evaluation of the trigger), physiological responses (your body's reaction), expression (if and how you express how you're feeling), and regulation (how and if you gain control over yourself). A feeling is a private conscious recognition of your feeling or mood, which only becomes public when you share it with others.
