What is functional theory in regard to leadership and when might this type of leadership occur?

Functional theory assumes that whatever the group needs at a particular time can be supplied by a set of behaviors any group member can contribute. So members might fill in leadership when needed. Functional leadership can occur when group members have an equal balance of power, a common goal, shared responsibility for work, and mutual respect for members.
