List the five responses to impending death identified by Greer and his associates. Give an example of at least two of these. Which of these responses is most likely to correlate with greater longevity following a terminal diagnosis?
What will be an ideal response?
Denial and fighting spirit correlate with higher longevity. The others are stoic acceptance, helplessness/hopelessness, and anxious preoccupation. The examples need to fit with the explanations outlined on pages 477–478 in the text. One example would be the person who is diagnosed with AIDS who responds at first with a sense of helplessness and hopelessness but then moves into anxious preoccupation. This person is likely to spend a lot of time online and reading articles and books about AIDS. They are likely to be hypervigilant about bodily symptoms.
