* Suicide is more prevalent among men than women, especially white men.
* Divorced people have the highest suicide rates.
* The majority of suicide victims suffer from some mental disorder.
* Someone who is able to describe a plan is more likely to commit suicide.
* Statements about hopelessness or helplessness are related to suicide risk.
* The individual has made a prior attempt.
* The person has few sources of social support.
* There is a history of alcohol abuse.
* There have been recent stressful events. (See Table 12-5, p. 509.)
