Briefly explain the first five stages of Knapp's model of relationship development

Knapp's model suggests that relationships are developed in stages. Beginning with the
initiation phase, individuals catch the attention of another and we feel drawn in. In the second
stage, experimenting, we engage in small talk to decide if we want to pursue a deeper
relationship. Third, we enter the intensifying stage, where we tell one another how we feel and
find out how others feel about us. This stage may also involve secret tests to uncover proof of
the extent of someone's commitment to us. Fourth, we move to the integrating phase, where
we are viewed by others as a couple or dyad. The fifth and final stage is bonding, where we
make a symbolic gesture of our commitment. Examples of bonding include engagement,
marriage, asking a friend to be a godparent, or naming a child after a friend.
