Erehwon is a semi-periphery country. Much of its population is well-educated, works in modern industries, and has a good quality of life, although pollution in the cities is high. Away from the major cities, many of Erehwon’s citizens are engaged in traditional subsistence agriculture, logging, or mining, and have only limited access to education, health care, and reliable transportation. Explain in broad terms what steps Erehwon’s Sustainable Development Agency can take to boost sustainable development in Erehwon. Be sure to address all three approaches covered by the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

What will be an ideal response?

the three approaches covered by the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals are poverty reduction, sustainable economic development, and resource protection. One example of a strong answer follows: The Sustainable Development Agency should invest in expanding access to quality education and health care throughout the country and in relocating those who are willing to move from the countryside to cities where better jobs are available. These efforts should reduce poverty. Expanding Erehwon’s transportation network is also necessary to achieve sustainable economic development. In addition, the agency could implement programs to promote the development of new innovative and sustainable industries. Preserving Erehwon’s natural resources is essential, so an effort should be made to teach the population sustainable farming and logging practices and to control and reduce the pollution that industries produce.
