Outline the diet strategies for management of xerostomia

What will be an ideal response?

Xerostomia increases the risk of dental caries, but can also result in decreased nutrient intake and weight loss. Dietary management should include strategies to lubricate and alleviate dryness to make eating and swallowing easier, without increasing risk of caries development. Frequent sips of water may be adequate, and patients should be encouraged to carry a water bottle with them. Sugar-sweetened beverages should not be encouraged. Ice chips or sugar-free frozen desserts such as ice pops may provide some relief. Sugarless gum or sugar-free candies may be used to stimulate saliva, but hard candies containing sugar should not be recommended. Sauces and gravies can be added to foods to make them moist and easier to swallow. Dairy may be beneficial, so aim to include at least 2—4 servings of dairy products daily.
