What is a speech of definition? How would you go about structuring and creating it? Trace the steps you would take

What will be an ideal response?

A definition is a statement of the meaning of a term. A speech of definition (as opposed to use of a definition as supporting material) assigns meaning to a term, concept, system, or theory, or pinpoints the similarities and/or differences among several of them. It may involve a subject new to the audience or a familiar one presented in a unique way. Begin by identifying the general purpose (to inform), then the specific purpose (to define whatever it is you are defining). Then create the thesis or central idea – what listeners should remember – by stating the intention to define it or to contrast it with others. Derive the main points by asking questions of the thesis; the answers will become the main points. Then support each main point with examples, illustrations, testimony, etc. For the organizational pattern, rely on multiple definitions, or use a topical order so each main idea is treated equally. Always move from the known to the unknown – start with what the audience knows and work up to what is new or unfamiliar.
