The Kobe earthquake hit Japan on 17 January 1995 . It was one of Japan's worst disasters during the twentieth century, registering 7.3 on the Richter scale, killing about 6,500 people, and causing about ¥10 trillion worth of damage to the Japanese economy. The earthquake caused the Nikkei 225 Index to fall, thereby plunging Leeson's position further into the red.
