During the past several decades--while baby boomers have been employed--the Social Security system has received much more income from taxes than it has been spending on benefits. The money has been accumulating is the Social Security Trust Fund. As more baby boomers retire, more money will flow out of the Trust Fund than will be taken in and the money will run out.
